I am coming up on the 10 year anniversary for the day I started taking Tae Kwon Do classes at my local dojo. As such, I felt like it was time to reflect on what I have learned. After all, whats the point of training if you dont learn anything?
So I looked back on how far I have come. When I began, I was young and naïve. To me, Taekwondo held an allure, an aura of mysticism and wonder above any team sport I had ever played. The older students I watched seemed to move on air, defying gravity (among many other physical forces) as they drilled. To my eyes, Taekwondo was more magic then sport.
But why is that?
No, really? Why is Taekwondo, heck, martial arts in general, seen as this mysterious unspoken practice? At first, I thought it was from all of the demonstrations various martial artists put on. Take your pick, from Shaolin fighters to Buddhist monks, to famous practitioners such as Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. You have everything fro

Now, when my friend, a college-age artist heard this, she found it hard to believe. The Cobra Kais from The Karate Kid are actually Artists? In short, no . The Cobra Kais in fact demonstrate what martial arts arent.
The Practice of Martial Arts is NOT a brutish strength contest or a group of fighters mashing each other into piles of hamburger. Its power isnt derived from magic or mysticism either, at least not in the traditional sense.
Martial Arts are what all art is, expression.
Martial Arts, while shown as exhibition sports and televised, are more about self improvement than combat superiority. In practice, your greatest opponent is yourself. Not to say that there arent some great opponents out there. Cobra Kai prove that if nothing else.
